Jan Breyne is a Belgian public officer, who was active in the city of Ypres and later at the Belgian federal government. He graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven in sociology and went to work in the city of Ypres. From 1972 to 1983 he was Director of Tourism at Municipality of Ieper and from 1983 to 1989 department head of civic affairs and information. He served as City Treasurer (1989-1997) and then Chief Executive of Ieper (1997-2010). He was National President of the VFG (Flemish Federation of Chief Executives) from 2005 till 2010. From 2009 till 2012 he was Cabinet Advisor of Prime Minister Yves Leterme. After his retirement in February 2010 he was appointed federal coordinator of the commemorations around the First World War, which will take place in the period from 2014 to 2018. He wrote the book “Ieper, portret van een stad” (Lannoo, 1992).
